Can someone explain why the UK thinks they have any leverage at all whatsoever?

I am not the smartest person in the world. Please explain this to me.

How does the UK have any sort of leverage whatsoever in negotiations? The UK wants access to the EU market without being a member and they’re upset the EU will never allow that…as that is what Brexit is, leaving the union.

I cannot understand this in the slightest. Why would Brussels give a centimeter in negotiations? The UK keeps threatening to leave with just WTO agreements in place. That is not a threat to the EU, that situations is worse for the UK, so what gives? This doesn’t make sense.

It’s almost as this whole ordeal wasn’t understood at all by those voting on it…
